Quality of Healthcare in Canada: A Chartbook (Sutherland and Leatherman 2010) was published by the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) in 2010 and provides a national picture of quality in healthcare, set in an international context. It is based on a conceptual framework of six key domains of quality: effectiveness, access, capacity, safety, patient-centredness and equity. The principles of the framework have been applied, with minor variations, in many countries around the world (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care 2004; Leatherman and McCarthy 2002; Leatherman and Sutherland 2005; Sutherland and Leatherman 2010).
