There is a belief in Canada that our health-care system is beyond criticism. It is treated almost as a point of national identity. We compare ourselves to the United States and reassure one another that, at least here, illness does not come with financial ruin.
That belief holds up until the moment you need care.
Then reality sets in. Patients wait months for surgery. Families search for a family doctor and come up empty. Emergency rooms overflow, and hallway medicine has become normalized. None of this is new, but it is getting worse.
