For the majority of Canadians, especially those living in major cities, relatively easy access to health care seems like a given. But for a significant share of the population it is anything but: According to 2024 research by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), some 9.1 per cent of people admitted into Canadian hospitals carry a high or very high travel burden, defined by the degree to which geography, age and/or urgency prohibits transportation to care.
