REGINA, Sask. — Data show that Canadian adolescents have faced serious mental health challenges in recent years. Now, a new national study suggests migrant girls may be among those most in need of support. While mental health worsened among all youth between 2014 and 2022, this new data indicates that migrant girls are being left behind.
Researchers from the University of Regina and the University of British Columbia published the study in the Journal of School Health. They analyzed data from more than 76,000 Canadian students aged 11 to 15 who participated in the nationally representative Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey in 2014, 2018, and 2022. It is among the first Canadian studies to track mental health trends among migrant youth and compare them with Canadian-born peers over time.
