The Canadian Patient Safety Institute (CPSI) convened a National Patient Safety Consortium to deliver a pan-Canadian patient safety action plan in an effort to drive real change in patient safety. It could not succeed if it were seen to be simply one organization’s agenda, it required commitment from more than 40 organizations, governments, professional and patient groups. 

These collaborations on Canada’s patient safety priorities evolved into CPSI’s bold new mandate and strategic plan for 2018-2023: Patient Safety Right Now. This new approach promises to help lead systems strategies by demonstrating what works in patient safety and strengthening commitment to safer healthcare across the country. 

An efficient and safe healthcare system requires the combined efforts of multiple organizations. With the support of its 100,000 physician members and in collaboration and partnership with others, the Canadian Medical Protective Association is developing innovative approaches to meaningfully advance system-level improvements to healthcare. Join Dr. Stern to discuss how greater collaboration can improve the safety of care for all Canadians.

AI has captured our imaginations. Computers that can learn and take on human tasks offer real opportunities across all of parts of our healthcare system. At the same time, we struggle with the simultaneous challenge of improving access, affordability and effectiveness in what sometimes feels like an “iron triangle”. AI technology gives us the ability to move non-routine tasks to machines and to patients with machines, augmenting the work of people and giving some hope of closing the gap between the demand for care and its supply in a more affordable way and on patient’s terms. The transformative impact of AI will be felt in making healthcare more affordable and accessible not just more effective.

Making integrated care a reality is one of the most important opportunities in front of us.   It is time to improve the experience and outcomes of care, value for money, and to fundamentally shift where and how care is accessed and provided.  In many ways, the opportunity in front of us is a universal movement for health system improvement. This session will include examples from around the world of integrated care applicability. We will interpret these examples to make them relevant to our national and provincial context, and showcase just how important it is to have patients and caregivers as partners in realizing the potential of integrated care.
